So I bought an Air Fryer. I kept hearing all about how wonderful these were and I started looking into them. I wasn’t sure this kitchen gadget would be something I NEEDED or something I just wanted to have because it sounded cool. After much thought I bought one and I’m glad I did! It’s become quite the useful kitchen tool. And, making 2 ingredient bagels are now a breeze.
Air fryers are awesome since they can cook up some fries without all the oil. the one thing I hated about making fries at home was not only the oil but the smoking that comes from it. Not my idea of a good time.
When I was looking at air fryers I looked at so many brands and so many sizes. The most common was about a 3 quart basket size, but others were larger. I wanted a larger one and a large one I got. I purchased a GoWISE USA 5.8-Quarts 8-in-1 Air Fryer. It has the larger basket, but the only drawback I found is that it is BIG. I wasn’t sure where i was going to store this bad boy.
So now you’re wondering about those 2 ingredient bagels…… I love bagels but they can be so big that I would feel like I had a bowling ball in my stomach after I ate one. While on the hunt for a recipe for small bagels, I found this gem all over the internet. I think it started with Skinnytaste and it only has two ingredients… TWO! This recipe is quite popular with those folks following the Weight Watchers program (2-3 Smartpoints per bagel depending on how you divide the dough) and I found it yummy. Are you ready? Here it is:
1 cup fat free plain Greek yogurt
1 cup self-rising flour
THAT’S IT! Note – If you don’t have self rising flour, just use all-purpose and add 1 1 /2 teaspoons of baking powder and 1/2 teaspoon of salt to the flour. Which makes it a 4-ingredient bagel, but still not bad right?
I put my ingredients into my KitchenAid Mixer and using the dough hook, I mixed it on speed 3 until it balled up into a dough. If it gets sticky, just add a sprinkle of flour. You can always hand-knead your dough, I just like to keep my poor arthritic hands pain-free.
The directions for this are simple too. Divide the dough into 4 to 6 equal amounts. Roll them out into a “snake” then make a circle, pinching the ends together. Then, sprinkle on your seasonings. I also added a bit of egg wash to the top so they brown nicely. OK, now we’re up to 5 ingredients with the egg wash.
Add the to the fryer basket (spritz a little cooking spray at the bottom of the basket first to avoid sticking) and set the temp to 330. Turn it on and allow it to cook for 16-18 minutes for 4 bagels, and 12-14 minutes for 6. Remember – not all air fryers are created equal. You know your fryer better than I do so adjust the temp and time as you need to.
The cool thing about the recipe is you can add all sorts of stuff to make these uniquely your own. For my first batch, I sprinkled Trader Joe’s “Everything But the Bagel” seasoning on top. My second, I added 1/4 cup of fat free cheddar cheese to the dough mix and sprinkled the top of the bagels with Mrs. Dash Italian Seasoning. The possibilities are endless with this recipe so let your imagination run wild!
I think this is going to be a go-to appliance especially in the summer when you don’t want to overheat your kitchen by using the oven. I’m so excited to further my kitchen adventure with an air fryer!
