Sunday night we added nine chickens to our home. Yep, chickens. While on the way to Hubby’s dentist appointment, our friend called us to tell us about some chickens that were up for sale and it was a package deal with the coop, food and all. After a long discussion of about 5 minutes, we said yes. Now, we are crazy chicken people. Read on…….
I love eggs. Hard cooked, deviled, poached, scrambled… yep, I will eat them many ways. We had been talking about getting chickens the last two years and it was on our Spring 2017 plan. Well, that plan came much earlier then we expected. Our friend set us up with the seller and this past Sunday we went to pick them up. Have you ever wrangled a chicken? It’s like herding cats but with feathers and flapping. Those ladies refused to stroll into the carrier and be on our way. Oh no, you have to catch them. It was probably the best laugh I had in months.
The enclosure you see is an old dog run that the former owner of the house left there. We were going to dump it, but so glad we didn’t. We put it together, covered it with the biggest tarp I had ever seen and the chickens have a new home. They seem happy.
All nine fit just fine in their red house when it’s time to go night night. And that’s good since it’s going to get cold and they can all cuddle up. We got our first egg in less then 24 hours after they settled.
If you have kept chickens before, I would love to hear all your tips and advice that worked for you. Please comment below with your sage wisdom.
Now, my sister is giving me a hard time about being a “farmer” but what are sisters for, right? She loves sending chicken related memes to me. Almost daily. She should talk. She has as many as seven wild turkeys who lay around her front yard every afternoon. But I do admit the memes are very funny.
