Where do you shop for your holiday menu? Winco has to be one of my favorite stores, especially for their bulk foods. That’s what made this years holiday baking so simple. Winco bulk foods and Chex Cereal. It’s like a match made in heaven!
One thing I remember a lot during holiday dinners is munching on appetizers while the main dish cooked. It was a time where the family sat around the kitchen counter, some of us cooking, the rest of us eating. We didn’t watch football on Thanksgiving when I grew up, we just talked, laughed and had a great time.
I’m a fan of crunchy snacks, so “Chex Mix with a Twist” was perfect. Chex cereal is so versatile and you can put a spin on the mix to suit your tastes. And it’s so easy to make so why not make three varieties?
I made a Maple Bacon Whiskey mix, a Cajun Spiced and a Salted Caramel mix. I think there is something here to please anybody! Two were topped with a different item that I found at the WinCo Bulk Foods section (my favorite part of the store). That’s my twist.
These three recipes all start with three cups of Chex Mix. Each one had separate add in’s and toppings to give it some extra heat and/or extra crunch.
Maple Bacon Whiskey
Mix Chex with 1 cup honey roasted peanuts, 1 cup of small pretzel twists, 1/3 cup melted butter, 3 Tablespoons maple syrup, 2 Tablespoons brown sugar and 1 Tablespoon Whiskey. Place on a cookie sheet and bake for 15 minutes at 350 degrees. Serve topped with chopped cooked bacon
Cajun
Mix the Chex with 1 cup small pretzel twists, 1/4 melted butter, 1 Tablespoon Creole seasoning and 1/2 teaspoon hot sauce (I used Tapatio). Place on a cookie sheet and bake at 350 degrees for 10 minutes. Serve topped with hot and spicy corn nuts.
Salted Caramel
Mix Chex with 2 cups caramel corn, 1/3 cup melted butter, 1 Tablespoon caramel sauce. Spread out on a cookie sheet and top with coarse sea salt. Bake for 10 minutes at 350 degrees, less time of you feel the popcorn is burning. Serve topped with chopped chocolate drizzled peanut brittle.
See how easy Chex Mix is to make? I love the versatility of these crunchy munchy appetizers and I know the whole crowd would be thrilled to snack on these.
