With the weather warming up, we grill all the time. I don’t know about you all, but we basically live outside during the spring and summer months. Now that we have a big yard, it’s even more enjoyable. Our old yard was merely a patio that measured about 6′ x 8′ and just fit the grill and a small table. No bueno. I was given the opportunity to review Yumms Grill Mats and figured since we’re cooking outside anyway, why not give these a try? I’ve never used grill mats before so I was interested in this. And, boy was I glad I jumped at this opportunity.

If you’ve ever tried grilling shrimp kabobs or anything small, you probably had something fall through the grates. I hate that!! I want to keep my shrimp ON the barbie, ya know? Using a grill mat takes away that problem since the food stays on the mat, not at the bottom of your grill. So, no wasted food.
The package contains two mats, and they measure 15″ x 13″. I was surprised at how thin they were and was worried they would melt under the heat of my grill. Then I realized they’re probably thin so I could cut them down if necessary. But the mats fit perfectly on my grill. The package says they are rated to withstand heats up to 500 degrees so I kept an eye on the grill to make sure I didn’t exceed that.
I guess my favorite part is they are non-stick. You know how salmon tends to stick to the grill even though you spray it with cooking spray? Well, using the mat eliminated that problem since I was able to flip it with ease so both sides cooked evenly without leaving pieces stuck to the grates. Gotta love that. FYI – my salmon isn’t burnt in the photo, it’s sundried tomato pesto on top. Really is good on salmon.
They are dishwasher safe which I haven’t experienced yet since I tend to wash things like this by hand, but I don’t doubt that. They are also safe to use in the oven and I haven’t tried that either. I like the fact they can store nice and flat either with your cookie sheets or at the bottom of a drawer. You could also roll them up and take them with you to the local park where you may be gathering with family to grill. I love that since this way, you know your food is touching only surfaces you are comfortable with. For me, that’s important since you really don’t know how clean a park grill is.
My verdict? They’re wonderful!! Perfect for my salmon, but I can also use them for veggies and kabobs. You can purchase them on Amazon for yourself. I forgot to mention they are re-usable too. So it’s helpful for keeping waste down.
