If you’ve ever entered my kitchen, you would know about my spice cupboard. Not a spice carousel, although I have one of those too. I have an entire cupboard dedicated to my collection of spices and seasonings. One of my favorites is paprika. I think it enhances many recipes and I use it often. When Kiva gave me the opportunity to review two varieties of smoked paprika, of course I was all over it.
About Kiva:
At Kiva, we strive to provide you with innovative food from around the world that is great tasting, healthy and of the highest quality. We are committed to using only ingredients that are sourced directly from local farmers that practice sustainable and eco-friendly methods
We imported our smoked paprika from the famous La Vera region of Spain. Following a century old recipe, hand-harvested peppers are smoked dried over holm oak for a minimum of 14 days . This gives our paprika its unique rich flavor. Our paprika is only made in small batches to ensure optimum aroma, color and flavor.
They have two varieties:
Sweet Smoked Paprika: Deep, rich flavor with a slightly sweet undertone.
Hot Smoked Paprika Deep, rich, slightly spicy flavor
I used the Hot Smoked first. This is not spicy hot, but flavorful hot. I noticed the smokey aroma right off when I added it to my ground beef. Hubby wasn’t into the hot flavor, so I just made it for my burger. My recipe is below
Hot Smoked Paprika Burgers
½ lb lean ground beef
1 teaspoon hot smoked paprika
1 clove garlic, crushed
S&P to taste
Mix everything together and form a patty. Grill on the barbecue 5-8 minutes on each side. This grilled up delicious. I just wish I took a picture to show you. But trust me, this was so yummy.
I used the Sweet Smoked Paprika next. This time, I made a sour cream sauce to top baked pork chops. The sauce was delicious and the smoked paprika really stood out without being overpowering. I should have made a double batch. I took a picture and wrote down the recipe for you.
Smokey Sour Cream Paprika Sauce
1 teaspoon Kiva Sweet Smoked Paprika
1 green onion, sliced
1 tablespoon butter
¼ cup chicken broth
¼ cup sour cream
Salt and Pepper to taste
Place the first three ingredients in a small sauce pan. Cook until onion is a bit fragrant. Add the chicken broth and stir until bubbly. Add the sour cream and mix until well blended. Season to taste.
My verdict: These are right there in my spice cupboard within arms reach so I can get to them easy. I really can’t get over how delicious the smokey flavor is. I can see me using these as apposed to the traditional paprika. Can’t wait to use them again!
I’ll have to give these paprikas a try!
How would you compare the sweet one to Budapest’s Best Hungarian Paprika (the one in the red can)? Thanks!
I’ve never used the Budapest Best. I’ll have to check it out.
