Is it possible to be addicted to Kale? I think hubby might be. Add to that his newfound love of spaghetti squash and I may just get him to eat more veggies in no time! We love burgers but they can be less then healthy with all the fixin’s. Building on hubby’s kale-love, I decided to shake up the burger a bit and give it a healthy twist. Burgers with Kale may be the new burger staple in our house.
When I was first starting out and making burgers, I would add a packet of onion soup mix to my ground beef for extra flavor. As I experimented more, I didn’t use that as much. This evening, I wasn’t in the mood to put a whole bunch of stuff in my burger so I went back to my onion soup roots and used it for my seasoning. Of course, I couldn’t forget the garlic.
Beef Burgers with Sauteed Kale
- 1/2lb 85/15 ground beef
- 1/2 teaspoon minced fresh garlic
- 1/2 packet Great Value onion soup mix
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 green onion (sliced)
- 1 teaspoon chopped fresh garlic
- 1 bunch fresh kale (rinsed with stems cut off)
- 1/4 cup white wine
- 2 whole grain sandwich thins (split)
- 2 Slices your favorite cheese
Although hubby added a big slab of cheese to his burger, it was still healthier then some of the one’s we’ve had in the past. I really liked the crunch and texture of the kale in each and every savory bite. And we piled the kale as high as we could. The onion soup flavor really brought back memories of making burgers in one of my first apartments. It was so tiny and in the one of the worst neighborhoods of Oakland, California, but it was all I could afford at the time.
Burgers are a MUST during the summer months, especially grilled outdoors so your house stays cool by not using the stove or oven. Burgers with kale will be a hit for the kale lover in you. Pair it with a fruit salad and perhaps a frothy adult beverage and you have a perfect evening!
