Some of you may be scratching your head thinking “What is a peppadew?” Well, Peppadew™ is actually a trademarked name for these delicious sweet & spicy pepper variety from South Africa. The peppadew peppers are a bit smaller then a golf ball and quite mild with a unique spicy flavor, but not so spicy you’re running for the ice water. They are also sometimes called piquante peppers so know to look for that as well. I did some research and found out they are rarely eaten raw and are usually found picked in jars or even in recipes for sauces and dips.
I read they are mostly available as a pickled variety and you can often find peppadew peppers in the olive bar at a grocery store. That’s where I discovered them. I shop at my local Harmon’s grocery store and they have a well stocked olive bar in their deli. One day while shopping, the deli staff were giving samples of these little red gems stuffed with bleu cheese. Normally, I loathe bleu cheese, but stuffed inside this pepper, it was delightful. I just had to buy some and thought stuffing them with crab would make an excellent holiday appetizer.

The bleu cheese stuffed peppadew pepper was wonderful, but these took the pepper to a new level. Pairing the sweet and spicy flavor of the pepper with the crab and cheese was incredible. And I think the stuffing possibilities are endless here. Just take your favorite protein such as the crab, sausage, shrimp or tofu and add your favorite cheese and you have an appetizer that will please your holiday guests with great taste and a colorful presentation
I’m fortunate that I live close to Harmon’s so I can feed my peppadew pepper obsession whenever I feel like it. If your local stores do not have an olive bar or don’t sell these in their stores, visit Peppadew.com. On their site, you can purchase jarred peppers and other Peppadew products for your recipes. They also have a bunch of their own recipes to try. I think the red colorful peppadew pepper will make a nice addition to my holiday appetizer list. What would you stuff them with?
