Crab Won Tons – Appetizers for Game Day

March 7, 2013

Try something new at your next sports party and wow your guests with these crab won tons. You can easily assemble them ahead of time too. You can also use shrimp

These delicious crab won tons are just in time for the March Madness basketball playoffs. They’re not the standard chips and dip or buffalo wings you traditionally see at a sports party.  This appetizer will be a pleasant surprise for your guests while you watch your favorite college team head to the final four.

Crab Won Tons, Serves 8

Ingredients:
1 can of lump crab meat, drained
1 clove garlic, chopped
1/4 of a medium yellow onion, finely chopped
1/2 of a 6 oz container of low fat cream cheese, softened
16 won ton wrappers
salt and pepper to taste

Drain crab meat and add to a small saucepan with the garlic and onion. Saute until heated through and garlic is fragrant. Drain any excess water.

In a small bowl, mix together the crab and the cream cheese. Salt and pepper to taste.

Take a dollop of the cream cheese mix and place it in the center of the won ton wrapper.

Fold over until they form little triangles. Press the edges together to seal the crab won tons shut. You don’t any of the delicate crab to escape!

Heat olive oil in a large saucepan, using enough to almost cover the won ton. Cook 3-4 won tons at a time in the oil until golden brown, flipping once. You want to make sure the won tons have room to move around and not stick to each other so be careful not to crowd the pan. Be sure to keep a close eye on them as they cook quickly and you can easily over cook the edges as the picture below shows.
When done, the crab won tons should be golden brown, not “blackened.” Serve with your favorite Asian dip or soy sauce.

We gave a bite to our bird Bongo and he loved the fried won ton wrapper. Since he is very spoiled, I took one wrapper, rolled it up and fried it just for him. It was in a tube shape which he could easily hold in his foot. Isn’t he cute?

Absolutely! I would give it a spritz of olive oil spray or an egg wash before baking to give them a golden color
